What is an FSA?

Forward Sortation Areas, explained

A Forward Sortation Area (FSA) is the first three characters of a Canadian postal code, like M4C or M6P. Toronto’s FSAs all start with M, and the digit maps to a postal zone: M1 covers Scarborough, M2 and M3 North York, M4 the east end and midtown, M5 downtown, M6 the west end, and M8 and M9 Etobicoke. Postal zones only roughly follow former borough boundaries, but they are how many suppliers and sales teams already carve up their Toronto territories.

That makes the FSA a practical unit for tracking construction: it is small enough to route a rep around, large enough to show a real trend, and it matches how delivery zones and service areas are usually drawn. Each FSA page above shows the permits issued in that area over the last 12 months, updated daily from City of Toronto Open Data.
